Re: [RC] Re:[RC] From Cat to dogs charging - Truman Prevatt

This can work but when it doesn't - it can be disastrous. My old mare would go after dogs on command. It worked all but once. Where I lived we had setbacks for all fences on the roads for horse trails and trails along the large drainage ditches that are common in Florida. One day we were trotting along and out comes this pit bull from a house that was under construction. The dog belonged to a construction worker. I turned my horse and he kept coming. I went after him and he retreated. With most dogs by then they would be high tailing home crying, "momma that big animal is after me." He didn't. As soon as I stopped he charged again.I took off after him again and chased him about 100 yards. He run, but he turned and charged again - madder than ever. By then the owner was there and refused to grab his dog, he claimed he was afraid of horses.

As I was yelling at this bozo to grab his dog the dog charged lunged at the horses neck and bit. The good news about a 16 hand horse was he only got the hide between her front legs. I figure a 14-2 horse would have had significant injuries. She'd had it by now, spun (dumping me and took off). She ran home with dog following and ran into an acre paddock which and open gait. I took off and when I got home she was lopping around the pasture with dog chasing. I went in the house and got my 12 gauge and .357 and called 911. By the time I got back out the owner had arrived. I stepped in the pastuer and told the owner that he had 10 seconds to get his dog or I was going to take care of him and lifted the 12 gauge and stepped in to get a clear shot. He somehow overcame his fear of horses. Actually it was almost over by then anyway as the dog was staggering to try to keep up with the mare who was just cantering at a nice little lope.

About then the Sheriff shows up, and calls animal control to come get the dog. I called the vet to come out and stitch the mare up. About a 4 inch square chunk of hide was hanging down. The vet told me to keep hosing it to keep it moist. It took about 40 to 50 stitches to sew up.

The owner paid my vet bills and received a hefty fine - required to get the dog back. The dog was locked up for 14 days at the pound to clear for rabies. The dog was subsequently put down by the county since it attacked and killed another dog when the guy was on another job.

If I had it to do over, I would have quickly dismounted and confronted the dog on foot. I always carry a pretty good locking blade knife with me and if necessary I would rather be on the ground if a dog attack than on a horse. I believe that with that dog - the horse chasing him only made him more aggressive. All the other times the dogs turned and ran - not this time.

The good news was the horse was fine. The vet did such a good job that there was not even any white hairs where the hide was ripped.

What has worked for me. Whip, squirt gun filled with vinegar, paintball gun but best of all an 1100 lb horse that has been taught to "get the dog". Aggresive dogs are more than a nuisance, they are a danger because they think they are allowed to act aggresively, eventually the lines between animals and people blur in their minds and you hear of a person getting mauled because he walked to close to "fluffy's" yard. I will ignore yappers, walk calmly past ones that stay in their yards and growl but let them step one foot on public property and they are fair game. My guy will turn around (on my command of course!) and charge them. I'm looking forward to getting my mare started under saddle, she really doesnt like dogs and will get the snakey head going too lol.
