Re: [RC] Carbon Monoxide Poisoning - Mike LewisPropane heaters such as the Mr. Heater aren't safe, either. I wish AERC would consider allowing folks to run generators at night to stay warm with electric heat... While this story deals with deaths from a generator, I know that generators kept outside the trailer and away from the LQ section are safer than running propane in a horse trailer. Our next door neighbors at an AERC ride I did recently ran their generator all night. I had two options: complain to them or to ride management, or stick earplugs in my ears. To avoid confrontation (and to stay in my relatively warm sleeping bag), I tried the latter option. I couldn't hear the generator through my earplugs and slept like a log (except for freezing all night, wishing I had a generator too!) From where I stand, the bottom line is that not everyone can afford an insulated trailer, propane heat isn't safe, and electric heat is the safest option. Not sure AERC would reconsider generators, but it sure would help us cheapskates pulling horse trailers without LQ... Not sure what other options may exist... I've found that a sleeping bag rated to 10 degrees is a start, but still hate waking up to ice on the metal bracing of my trailer!! --- SteveHallmark@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx wrote: Not trying to open up a new argument on Generators, but just want to remind folks of the carbon monoxide hazards when sleeping in a horse trailer. The investment in a Carbon Monoxide Detector could possibly have prevented this incident........... Two men found dead in horse trailer at SoCal equestrian park The Associated Press Published 2:42 am PST Saturday, February 24, 2007 Two men were found dead in a horse trailer at a Riverside County equestrian park after they were apparently overcome by carbon monoxide fumes from a gas generator, authorities said. The men, identified as Jorge Rodriguez-Ramirez, 47, of Vancouver, Wash., and Armando Sanchez Gallardo, 21, were discovered early Friday, sheriff's officials said. It wasn't immediately known where Gallardo was from. Their bodies were in a trailer parked in a lot at the HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal, located a few miles south of Coachella in Riverside County. A portable gas generator had been used to keep them warm as they slept. "The decedents appeared to have been overcome by carbon monoxide fumes from the generator's exhaust," the Sheriff's Department said in a statement. Autopsies were expected to be performed Monday. Further details were not immediately available. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
