The lamenesses are the main problem now. Personally - I don't think the horse is designed to maintain those speeds for those distances. Yes, they can go fast. Yes, they can go far. They have evolved for just such capabilities. But fast AND far...? I don't think there was ever a Darwinian need to outrun a predator for 100 miles...
