RE: [RC] Weight of Horse and Rider - heidi

While it's true that total weight of over 1200 lbs only impacted lameness pulls, not metabolic pulls, increasing one's chance of being pulled for lameness still impacts the "overall" failure rate...   ;-)

The thing that impacted the metabolic side of the failure rate was body score--skinny horses are more apt to fail metabolically.

So the bottom line is that ideally, you want a horse whose body weight added to your weight with tack does not exceed 1200 lbs, and who is small enough that he can do that without being skinny.

p.s. In Susan's Tevis study, a combined total weight of greater than
1200 pounds did not increase the overall failure rate of such
participants, it just increased the chances of being pulled for
lameness.  It had no measurable effect on metabolics.  Rider weight, on
the other hand, had no measurable effect on anything.
