[RC] Weight of Horse and Rider - k s swigartMel said: So, does this mean that the max a horse should carry is 30% of body weight or does the combined weight of horse and rider trump this? Well...since my pony was carrying 33% of her body weight, I would have to say that the answer is no. What it means is that the number of variables associated with work done and the capacity to do work are innumerable such that attempting to model it and thinking that there is some kind of linnear relationship (or an answer to the above question) is absurd. kat Orange County, Calif. :) p.s. In Susan's Tevis study, a combined total weight of greater than 1200 pounds did not increase the overall failure rate of such participants, it just increased the chances of being pulled for lameness. It had no measurable effect on metabolics. Rider weight, on the other hand, had no measurable effect on anything. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
