[RC] Comfort Issues on Long Rides - Mike LewisI've dealt with significant pain while riding in the past, but now that I want to get into 50 to 100 mile races am finding that my ability to "just deal with" the pain comes up a bit short when ride times get beyond 3-4 hours. Specifically, I'm losing skin on the back of my legs while riding and dealing with inner calves that are numb from riding. I've come in more than once with bloody legs and a bloody bum from chaffing. My attire consists of riding tights that are padded in the bottom, knees, and inner calf areas, so I'm not sure why I'm having such a rough time. I rode in running shoes last weekend but won't do that again as I've learned that my ankles need better support. I ride in a Sports Saddle with the standard stirrup fenders. Being a man with hairy legs, I assume the skin loss problem can be solved only by checking my pride and shaving my legs. I'm guessing the numb calves can be solved by lowering the stirrups a bit so that the stirrup leathers don't put pressure on them. These are starting points, but I'm interested in knowing what others who have experienced these issues suggest. What clothing/equipment choices might remedy these problems? I've ridden in half chaps before but found that they interfere with the flaps on my saddle... Not sure if I can send the saddle back so it can be fitted with lower flaps on each side. Thank you for any suggestions. Mike =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
