I really have to agree...This is a conversation that started with a
good point, and then got so blown out of proportion. I agree that
there really isn't an excuse for aggressive kicking or biting behavior
with an aggressive motive, and such behavior should always be quickly
corrected. I once had my foot broken by a habitual kicker who kicked
at my mare while riding, but that is totally different from a horse
who is aggressively bitten from behind, and raises a foot in protest.
You can't fault a horse for being a horse. The biter should be
corrected most certainly, but when it comes to the horse who
retaliated a certain level of provoked behavior can be expected and
understood. It's along the same lines the the spooking issue with my
mare. Sometimes when she's feeling naughty or doesn't feel like
working, she will look for excuses to lightly spook, which I correct
her for. If, however, a large deer run right out under her nose, and
she spooks, I can't do anything but understand that she is responding
in a natural prey animal fashion. This spook might result in a fall
that gets me injured, but we all know that there is an inherent risk
that goes along with riding and handling horses, and some situations
just happen.

Also, what do we expect from our horses? We have to understand that as
much as we have adapted their behavior to suit our purposes, they
still see the world through horse eyes, not human ones. All we can do
is be the most vigilant that we can be, and avoid tight or provoking
situations as much as possible.

But come on everyone, some of you don't have anything
to do other than whine about a lapse of reason that a
rider might have. One more time: This is a sport
that is SUPPOSED to be fun.
