In addition to the "good" aspects of living in a small environment where 
your friends, and local merchants, would be helpful because they knew and 
cared, local gossip was at least as intrusive and damaging as anything on 
the internet.

The Sinclair Lewis novel "Main Street" has lots to say about this problem in 
a Midwest town.

By the way, please do not take any of my posts as an endorsement of poorly 
done computer based pseudo "personal" marketing.  I was just reminding 
people that feeling that nobody knows your personal business, has been 
rather rare in the history of the human race.
