Re: [RC] Feedin' horses - Truman PrevattI think Bruce is right about it because difficult to determine because we don't tend to feed just one (or two ) things alone. Back when I started one very good endurance vet told me if you need more energy you add corn - to a limit. If that doesn't completely do the trick you add oil.At that time the mare need more feed to keep on the weight. I did it and it worked fine. I used cracked corn and added to a commercial textured feed when the feed didn't seem to contain sufficient calories and I didn't want to add a lot more protein to the diet. A friend had an equine nutritionist tell him to add barley when his horse needed more calories. That worked fine for him. In reality it not the feed, it's what's in the feed. It's so much percent protein - it's pounds of protein. Today I'm out of the feed mixing business. Today there are so many good commercial feed mixes and supplements on the market that there is little need to roll your own. I simply use a good feed, XTN for the guys working hard and Legacy for the other guys with a good supplement for Se which we have none in our soils and a all around protein/vit supplement for those that tend to live on air and that's it. That, a few soaked alfalfa cubes and all the grass/grass hay they want and they seem to do just fine.
