Good Morning Campers, I 100% agree that most
people will never find this concept to their agreement. The roots of Will
Tevis go deep into history and there may be 1/2 of 1% that do find the concept
intriguing. Riding 4 horses on an indoor arena of 1/10 of a mile oval
would not be my idea of fun either. But he was out to prove a point, and
he went 200 miles in 10 hours. That feat will never again be duplicated
even w/ a stable of Shaiks horses. Did he cut corners? Did he go
thru a Vet inspection? These and other thoughts and critiques will never
be known as when we were attempting this in 1994 i called Sandra Tevis Haggin
and asked for some newspaper clippings of the event and was told they had been
burned in a fire.
In 1994 we reversed our course and did not cover
the same terrain in the entire 24 hours. We have discussed doing it again
and using a 5 mile or so course thru more natural terrain. With a longer
course tho you are penalized if your horse did not pass a soundness exam and
that happened to me when 1 horse came up lame...i lost those miles.
It is a wonderful means to raise money for
charities.
It is not for everyone thats for sure. But
somewhere out there there will be other attempts at this concept of riders
wanting to see how far they can go. It definately puts the stress on the
rider and takes the majority of it off the horses.
Its so nice to wake up in the morning and look back
into the history of the past as a new day enfolds. ts
