Do you just drive into the fairground and there will be people

there or do you have to call ahead?  If you have to call ahead do you
just look up 'fairgrounds' for that particular state?

You should try to plan your stops. Most fairgrounds request
reservations and payments ahead of time. The US Stabling Guide is a
good resource for overnight stables.

When I am looking for fairgrounds, I google "county and state
fairgrounds in ___ ".
