I feed the hay in a deep bin, about 3 feet deep, just
enough so the horse can reach the bottom. But this horse digs his nose
into the hay and gives it a mighty flip out onto the ground. It's as if
he's sneering as he does so, "This isn't good enough for me." Too
bad. Shorter rations until he cleans it up.
Sometimes horses just won't eat what they aren't used to. Some horses
(esp. ex-race horses) won't even eat apples and carrots until they are taught
to like them. Unless you are at a ride and know they NEED to eat NOW, I
wouldn't worry about it - they will eat it when they get hungry as long as it
is good quality hay. You might explore how to keep them from using it as
bedding - perhaps feeding in a tire or something?
