If you want to get into "shades", chestnuts/sorrels can run from appearing almost black to difficult to tell from palomino, which is a whole 'nother story. But as Heidi says they are all "red". It's my understanding that genetically there are only two colors in horses, red and black. Everything else is a modification of one or the other. Roans, duns, and greys are interesting. All the "spots", paints, pintos, appaloosas, etc., have their own rules and patterns.
