RE: Fw: [RC] Chestnut vs Sorrel - heidiHaving owned some of both, Arabs and QH and others, they are not the same color. Easy to separate if you care. I like all shades of both, with and without chrome. (And the last few years I've only ridden greys) And I'm well aware AHA and TB don't recognize a difference. TBs are rarely sorrel, QHs and Arabs are often either. Haven't paid enough attention to other breeds to note the frequencys. The rub comes in the genetics. They are not genetically distinct colors--they are both shades of "red" (ie lacking the gene for black pigment, and not having any other modifiers to alter the color). The TB and Arab registries go by the genetics, and choose to call all "red" horses "chestnut." The QH registry goes by shades of color, and distinguishes between the two. But if one wanted to follow that same pattern, one should be consistent and also single out "liver" and several other shades of "red" instead of just "chestnut" and "sorrel." And if you wanted to go that route, you could do the same thing with bays, quite frankly--red or "blood," mahogany, black/bay, etc. All distinct "shades" by the rationale that denotes a difference between "sorrel" and "chestnut." Being interested in the genetics of it, I personally think that the QH registry does a disservice by recognizing "colors" that are not distinct genetic entities, but hey, that's just me.
