Re: [RC] Rule Change Proposal, questions - Beth WalkerI'm not trying to regulate out the idiots. I'm just trying to give novice riders less incentive to get excited about "winning" their very first few rides. The proposal is targeted toward the well-intentioned - but not-quite- knowledgable-enough rider. The proposal is for the first 3 -- just the first 3 -- rides at a given distance. It is not trying to turn LDs, or AERC into CTR. IMO - if someone can't be patient for 3 rides when they start the sport, or when they first move up in distance, they have some other agenda in which their horse's welfare is not very high on the list. As for adding paperwork to the RM - I am trying not to. I'm going to take the #2 logistics item out. It will make it purely on the honor system. If it turns out the majority of people lie on their entry forms - that should tell everybody something.. As for the Duck rides - I haven't been to one, but I have heard about them. I believe a lot of them are multi-days, which probably discourages novice riders in the first place. A multi-day format, all by itself, is going to encourage people to ride more conservatively, or they aren't going to have a horse for the rest of the ride meet. Besides - I get the feeling that the Duck would have no problem drop-kicking a 'problem rider' out of his ride... I feel sorry for their mounts, but I for one don't want more rules, restrictions etc. Take a look at the Ducks rules and check out the treatment rate at his rides. As far as LD goes (most of my rides are LD's so that I can crew for my wife at longer distances) I don't think they should be considered a race and therefore no BC is necessary. I also disagree with any rule that puts in a minimum time for LD's. One of these days my mount may just feel like sailing over the trail and I can see no reason to have to slow her down just because some people have over ridden their horses. I also disagree with lowering the HR for LD's-the present system works. My wife and I left CTR because of all the rules, please don't shut down this venue for us. One other comment- all of you who think "one more piece of paper or one more thing for the ride manager to check" is no big thing- put on a ride or two and see how much more work you are willing to take on.
