Re: [RC] another bump to consider - Don HustonThat is a classic description of a splint. Some horses show lameness some don't but all will have heat if the splint is new like on Leo. I have had the misfortune of having 2 of my horses get a splint. The first horse was never lame at all and I continued to pleasure ride for several months until there was no heat and the bump shrunk to about half the original size then I went back to riding 20-30 miles on weekends. The second horse (my current endurance horse) re-injured an old splint that he had when I bought him. He was like Leo and did things that made me think he might be off during a 50 but then be fine the next 50. I ignored my suspicions and it was a mistake. The bump slowly got bigger and then the tendons swelled up below the bump after 2 50's last Feb. He was on R&R for 5 months then 3 months getting back in condition. We got 3rd out of 5 top best condition vet score (not based on speed, we finished 56 out of 68) in a 25 last month so next is a 50 on Jan 5th. I would be careful and have a vet check it.Don Huston At 04:15 PM 11/6/2007 Tuesday, you wrote: My 5 year-old nutcase, I mean, endurance prospect Leo has a one-inch hard, round lump halfway up on his cannon bone. He didn't have it a few months ago. It is painless apparently--he doesn't react to pressure there at any rate. Is this a common no-big-deal occurrence or something I should be checking into further? I've heard of splints but don't understand what they are exactly. This lump is part of or on the bone. It's toward the front of his leg and is not near any moving parts.
