Re: [RC] [RC] Bodyclip or not? - Beth WalkerI'm in the San Diego area, but I got converted to trace clipping with my old fellow, who had a very long winter coat in his old age. I started clipping him one winter after he got overheated on an easy pleasure ride (80 degrees in December..), and it made a huge difference the rest of that warm winter. Yeah - it looks funny, but it is a nice compromise between a full body clip and a fuzzy, overheated horse.Since I've never managed to start clipping before December, I generally will start blanketing after I do the clip, since they are now missing all that warm belly hair, and the temps in December are usually around 50 or below. I generally use just a sheet to start - no filling until the temp gets to the low 40's / high 30's, and then switch to a blanket with light/medium fill: about 180 - 200 grams. I tried to "calibrate" my blanketing by periodically checking him at around 6 AM to get a good idea of what he needed at what temperature. I've never felt comfortable doing a full body clip, because I board, and I am at work during the day. I would worry about sudden weather changes during the day. With a trace clip, they still have some protection if I get surprised by the weather.
