Agree.  I didn't like the earplug idea either, but it turned out I could 
hear the close-up sounds of the horses just fine--generator was far enough 
away I could finagle the earplugs to a sweet spot.

I appreciate the productive replies to my question, and also understand (and 
can sympathize with) some of the strong opinions also expressed.  Forced air 
induction sounds like something to consider, even before getting the LQ 
finished.  Deep cycle batteries, ducting, an appropriate heater, and fans 
should be easy to come by (famous last words...)
