Re: [RC] Which breed is best? - Jon . LindermanWhoa, don't get a pacer??? I have to disagree. My son & I train & race stdbreds (pacers) as a family hobby, though we have had alot of success. Pacers train, or as we say, jog, most of the time at a trot. There are far more pacers racing, so by sheer mass, far more pacers to adopt. Too early to tell, but I took our oldest pacer (11) off the track in the late spring after 200 starts & have done a few hundred miles on him under saddle including 4 LD or CTR rides. Nice nice trot and from the idea of work ethic been there done that hes great. Hey do not overlook a nice pacer if you want to try a stdbred, many/most can trot wonderfully. Jon
I have a pacer, he is o.k. to ride and has an awesome gaited thing happening that is very comfy as well!!:-) Standardbreds are awesome But be really , really careful when asking about soundness, I know a few people who have purchased a "sound"Stbrd off the track that weren't. I have been told a good thing to do is check their race records for clues!:-) A friend of mine has a pretty, friendly 3 yr old Stdbrd. for sale. :-) Chrystal
I'd suggest you consider a Standardbred. They come off the track broke to drive and looking for adoptive homes. The ones I know have amazing temperments. They're easy to work with and have really been there/done that in terms of handling. They can do endurance, driving and dressage. Just look for one that trotted at the track, not paced.
