[RC] Funny Story re: saline - Mary HowellMy new, young accident prone horse recently sustained a deep cut across the back of one front pastern we discovered when we fetched him out of the pasture to apply his first set of shoes. He stood OK for the shoeing since there were 2 of us, but I had a hard time treating the wound by myself in the days after since he got very sensitive and would rear up when I lifted the leg. I ended up fixing a big feed tub of hot salt water (in about the ratio discussed on Ridecamp) to set that hoof in to soak and loosen off the scab that kept forming each day. I'd then slap on some antibiotic, etc. The funny part is that when I'd show this horse the tub of hot salt water, He'd DRINK most of it - probably 2 gallons - before I could set his leg in the tub - so I'd have to run inside and fix some more! This happened 3 different days, all hot ones - and yes he had access to plenty of cold water AND a mineral block. Maybe he was missing the beers the friend who gave him to me had taught him to drink? ;) Anyone who gets a chance to swim in the ocean can attest that salt Water is good for skin and healing wounds! Plus its cheap to make! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
