RE: [RC] Vaccines question - Kimberly HuckThanks Susan, Yes, it helps but.... You said.... "and might contraindicate vaccination if causing secondary purpura hemorrhagica is a reasonable possibility." ?????HUH???? Can you please put that in laymen's terms for the DVM impaired? :) Ok.... so, there different titers for different things? One titer per disease? For example, I vaccinate for EWT, Flu/Rhino, West Nile and Rabies. Would that require a different titer for each? I hope this isn't too stupid of a question, but do you find that horses under stress, like endurance horses, show lower titer levels? I guess what I'm asking is can stress alter the numbers in any way? I'm thinking of how stress affects the immunity system in humans/horses. Just curious. Thanks again and I'll certainly check with my vet. Kim -----Original Message----- From: Susan E. Is that a difficult and/or expensive thing to do? What is involved? Is there a certain time when a titer should be pulled like one month after vaccination or 6 months after or is anytime sufficient? No, it's not difficult, but does involve a venous blood sample and submission to the lab via your vet. You need an account with the lab, so I don't think owners can submit directly. Based on what the lab charges, you could probably expect most vets to charge somewhere between maybe $90 - 150 for the test. You'd want to check titers a few (3-4) weeks after vaccination if you wanted to see if they had been effective in eliciting a protective immune response; or prior to vaccinating if your horse had previously been exposed to strangles, and you wanted to see if they already had high titers---which would mean they had already mounted an immune response to one extent or another; and might contraindicate vaccination if causing secondary purpura hemorrhagica is a reasonable possibility. Hope this helps. Susan Garlinghouse, DVM =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
