[RC] Input on feeding Young ones. - Queenslace

Hi Folks,

You all were very helpful with feedback on proper feeding for my Arab mare a few years back. She is 13 now and doing awesome. I follow the same regime  for 5 year old gelding. Most of you said they eat about 20% of their body weight a day. Whatever you do not feed in grain and hay they will consume in pasture if available to them.

Do you have some advice on feeding yearlings? Is it the same, they consume 20% of their body weight? I'm assuming there would be constant change because of their rapid growth. And, does the breed matter?

Also, these two boyz were rescued and are back to full/excellent health. Both are geldings, one 10 months and other 18 months old.

They are getting about 1 1/2 to 2 lbs of pellets per day in 2 feedings. 1/2 in the am 1/2 in the pm. 1 flake each of hay at both feedings.

And they are turned out on full pasture 24/7.

If we give them more hay, will this save some of the pasture or will they consume the same amount of pasture?

These guys are turned out full time and not yet in routine work or trained schedule, however, they are getting tons of exercise.

Looking for any feedback you all may have.

Denise
