I also use a breast collar for all the reasons people are posting you about.  
Mine is biothane with a neoprene cushion where the three pieces meet in the 
front of the chest - got it from Teddy at Running Bear.  While my saddle fits, 
my horse is 'girthy' and I ride with a pretty loose girth and when he gets to 
jumping around with me in the saddle that breast collar just keeps everything 
where it should be.  The other reason I never ride without one is what the 
ladies I ride with call " defensive riding".  I always have one hand gripping 
the top of the breast collar....has saved my seat numerous times when he has 
decided to hit the air brakes, also keeps my hands low.  Beauty of biothane - 
hose off when done.
