RE: [RC] falling off the horse-long - Sheila A. Walsh

When I first brought my then 4year old gelding home, I had not owned an Arab
before. So, I asked a friend that bred them what I could do about his
spookiness. She said not to hit him, but to find the nearest hill and work
him up and down it until he was huffing, as quickly after a spook as I could
safely do. That was the beginning of the end of his dramatics. Arabs are
so smart.

Broke my ribs from a spook off of my pretty sane endurance horse. He's the
one that I trust with my life, but he's the only horse to make me go to an

emergency room! It was near the end of the ride, and I walked the 1/4
mile back to the parking lot, drove the horses back to the barn, put them
away, unhitched, went home, fed myself took a shower, went to bed. The next

morning, a Sunday, I couldn't get out of bed because it hurt to much, so I
decide to go the the ER instead of riding.... drove myself in.

At the ER I didn't want a ride in the wheelchair from the exam bed because
that meant I had to sit down and then get back up - rather walked. Yep,
three broken ribs on the right thoracic, here's some Vicodin.

I hurt for a week, got on the horse a week and a half later and decided I
was okay to ride a Fireworks 50. I hauled a friends horse to the ride. Her

mare slammed me against the trailer door during the trailer loading - gawd
it hurt with my broken ribs.... but I'm okay. We go to the ride, I'm
thinking I'd just quit if I couldn't handle it. Well, three of us went
there to prep for Swanton, three of us get pulled. I thought I would be the

one RO'ing for my injury, but it was my horse with his chronic crooked
issues that got us pulled at the last vet check. The friend's horse that I
hauled got pulled at the first trot out. and the third of us got pulled for
something else in the vet check between - what a sad crew - no Swanton for
us that year.

My ribs were okay, but my abdomen got really inflamed the following week, so

I went to the doctor. Blood work turns out to be liver enzymes off,
probably due to a bruised liver from the trailer loading incident...

I'm sure that each case is different. I was lucky that it didn't slow me
down too much. I think that it bothered me more after having whiplash in a
minor fender bender to ride a horse - not because of pain - but because my
equilibrium was off....

K.
