Re: [RC] Race (was: FACTS) - Truman Prevatt

I think John has a very valid point. The ROC didn't run in areas where there was an issue of vehicles and horses interacting in a negative way. This ride did. I would compare this more to the XP2000. Many people riding multiple days across Kansas, Nebraska and easter WY - much along road sides. Not a problem. The XP was a "ride" not a race and there were no incidents of this sort.

I think this particular ride was an accident waiting to happen. Significant prizes and the connotation of a race are much different than the XP.

Given the accident with property damage, and bodily injury I expect there will be an investigation and maybe litigation. One or more of the riders could be charged with some sort of traffic infraction because they might be considered to have caused the accident. Given the news coverage and maybe the perception of the term "race" I think the AERC better be proactive and try to do some spinning of the events before they get spun by the events. Insurance company lawyers aren't the most charitable people on the face of the earth.

In retrospect - while I hate like the dickens to agree with JT - I have to say he is pretty much on the money. The AERC probably should not have sanctioned the ride or is it race.

But, to really get to my point. IMO AERC
should never have sanctioned an event with
the "R" word in it's title. The "Race" in Great
Santa Fe Horse Race may have set the context
for all discussions of the event and the accident.

Probably, but if this is the case, then the Race of Champions is another ride that the AERC will have to deny sanctioning to were it ever to be revived.

The AERC has always had and continues to have a bit of a love hate
relationship with the word "race."

And not just the word, but also the concept.

It may be time for the organization to do as the Duck suggests and
separate the rides from the races since he is clearly quite right that
the rules necessary for safely administering each are quite different.
And right now, the rules the AERC has are inadequate for safely
administering a race and overly strict for administering a ride.
