RE: [RC] Ride vs Race - heidiI don't think changing a word fixes the problem. By any realistic definition of the word 'race', that's what we do.I race at every single ride. Lots of time I'm in a knock down drag out race between 31 and 32 place, or even 62 and 63rd and the other person has absolutely no idea I'm racing them, but in my mind I'm trying to figure out how to get out of the next vet check ahead of them and get out of sight! I might want to beat them while stopping at every single puddle to offer water, and every attractive clump of grass to graze, but I'm still trying to figure out how to stay ahead while doing that. As a teacher I HATE grading. I hate it worse than anything, but I've found that the second you quit grading the quality of the work drops considerably. Competition improves us. Well said, Angie. I'm always figuring how to be more efficient out of the checks, etc., too--even when I'm dang near last. I LOVE "beating" people at pulsing down and getting out of the checks ahead of them, even when it doesn't mean didly in the overall outcome. The fact that the clock is running is integral to the sport.
