RE: Re: [RC] Reality bites/ horse slaughter - Susan E. Garlinghouse, DVMInteresting, just this morning while I was out riding I had an exercise rider from the local training track stop me to talk - she has a 4 year old thorobred she needs " to find a home for" free and says there are alot of cheap horses ( $100) that she knows of that people are trying to get rid of. I asked why and she said " now that the killers aren't buying there is no where to get rid of these horses". Sad. And this is in the heart of ' horse country'. So, just out of curiosity, are the zoos/wildlife sanctuaries no longer taking donations of horses for feeding to animals? I thought I had heard that Wildlife Waystation used to take horses, but no longer does---I suspect just because the emotions can run too high, and many such places rely on the good opinions of do-gooders for donations to continue running the place. I know many people would find this a repugnant solution to disposing of excess horses (I personally do not, as long as the horses are transported and handled with compassion and efficiency), but still a much better end for many animals than starving in pasture. Just curious if anyone knows. Susan Garlinghouse, DVM =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
