[RC] Thank you Ridecamp -- (Was: Should I buy this horse?) - Donna O'GaraWhat an amazing resource Ridecame is! In the first 24 hours after I posed my question many people looked at my pictures and over 30 people were kind enough to give me their reasoned opinions. Naturally the replies varied from "Don't do it" to "If you don't take her I want her." Many people suggested things I hadn't thought of, and several shared their experiences with similar problems. Most thought she would improve significantly with groceries and exercise. I've decided to go ahead and buy her, feed her, love her, and not expect too much of her. If she turns out to be a good distance horse I may eventually take her to competitive trail rides or limited distance rides. If not, that's fine. I'll just amble around my local trails with her. She was well cared for her first two yesrs, thenshefound herself in a bad situation with the people caring for her only feeding her when theyremembered. After an extended time, possibly a year or more of serious malnutrition, she went back to heroriginalowners where she was gradually fattened up. Herownerclaims her vet says she should have no problems. She'snow 6 or 7 and seems healthy and happy. My other concern is her prominent backbone. Even though she's not thin her spine sticks up. Itdoesn'tseem to interfere with the two saddles I've seenonher, but I'd suppose a treeless one would be a problem. I've seen several of her relatives andmanyof them have similar backbones but none asextreme. Her hindquarters seem considerably higher than her withers. It didn't occur to me to measure that. She'svery small, just a bit over 14 hands. I'm really quite fond of this little mare, so Ihopenobody talks me out of getting her. Thanks for taking a look and letting me know whatyouthink.
