RE: [RC] Colic/Mineral Oil - Susan E. Garlinghouse, DVM
I don’t think it’s a good idea. One, oils syringed into the
mouth don’t elicit the same swallowing reflex that water or slurries do, and if
mineral oil goes down the trachea instead of down the esophagus, it can cause
aspiration pneumonia. Very bad.
Two, I don’t think it’s feasible to get an effective amount of
mineral oil down a horse’s throat by syringing, so you’re better off not doing
it at all (mostly because of the aspiration pneumonia thing). I also don’t
think adding mineral oil to abran mash does much, I’d much rather offer a
really sloppy something or other to encourage some fluid intake.
I suspect if the horse got over it, it was because of the
banamine and walking, not because of the mineral oil.

My friend's
horse had a mild colic last night. She gave a dose of banamine and walked
him and he got over it without the vet's assistance. My question is
should she have syringed mineral oil into him? I thought I read
that oil should not
be syringed. She did syringe some into him and he is fine.
