when I was a newspaper reporter,  had a running debate with teh sports editor for 7 years about this very subject. He thought the horse did all the work and horse sports aren't TRUE SPORTS.

I asked him about the olympics and said horse sports have been part of the olympics since the time of the ancient greeks. No comment from him. He said it was a girl sport. I said, girls weren't allowed in the olympics in ancient greece and weren't allowed to compete on horseback in the modern olympics til when, the 1970s???

I said what about auto racing, doesnt hte car do all the work, the driver just sits there.

asked him about polo. Said it's got everyting that otehr field sports do... it's got bats, an object to hit, goals, referees, points...

Tried for all those 7 years to get him to ride a horse with me.uhuh, he was SKEERED of them, hahahahaha
