Re: [RC] Tevis winners - rides2farMy non horse boyfriend believes with all his heart> that the horse is the only one who needs to be in shape...because the riders> just sit there. My advice is take him to a ride, ask a few females who are doing the 100 to please flex their calf muscles. Ask your boyfriend to flex his. As he slinks away thank the riders and go ask him if he thinks they got that way sitting down. My students are something between impressed, aghast & appalled when I show them mine. I've considered taking photos of several of my friend's calves which make mine look like nothing at all. That's my next quest...a slideshow of "this could happen to you" photos for women considering endurance riding. :-) but still had not built my strength up to be able to ride a 50 mile. I entered my first 25 in Scottsdale, but >>>couldn't finish due to a leg cramp. I need to go to the gym to build my muscle, or run like an marathon runner, Don't forget riding lessons. The more *correctly* you ride, and the more correctly your saddle places you, the less *effort* is involved. I don't get nearly as sore on a 100 now as I used to get on a 50 on the wrong horse, wrong saddle, doing things the wrong way.
