[RC] Adequan vs generic - Kristi SchaafDoug - I found out, after ordering 'generic Adequan' for my horse, that he wouldn't be receiving the same ingredients as Adequan. 'Generic Adequan' is a very misleading name, since it's NOT the same thing (unlike human drugs, where a generic drug IS the same thing). Adequan is a PSGAG and 'generic Adequan' is usually either a compounded solution of acetyl-d-glucosamine (Red Cross Drug, Blanchard, Okla) or a solution of chondroitin monosulfate (Chondroprotec). I'm basing this on what I learned in 2004 - maybe today there is a true generic Adequan (ie same exact ingredients)? You can read a study on the effectiveness of these two 'generics' vs Adequan in the article "Efficacy of Intramuscular Chondroitin Sulfate and Compounded Acetyl-d-Glucosamine in a Positive Controlled Study of Equine Carpitis" in The Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, 2003; 23(7): 295-300. I'm not trying to say that Adequan is 'better', because I don't know. I'm just sharing what I learned after buying and using the generic version and not seeing any difference in my horse. Would Adequan have helped him? Dunno.... Kristi Life's a journey, so enjoy the ride (and try not to fall off) ____________________________________________________________________________________ Don't get soaked.
