Re: [RC] Gaited 1/2 Arabs - Sharon LevasseurActually, he's an Arab x Rocky Mountain Horse, not a Missouri Foxtrotter cross. It's just that the conformation he ended up with dictates that he is capable of a foxtrot instead of the RMH's usual "amble" (otherwise known as either a stepping pace or saddle rack, I think??). I have no idea whether the average Arab/RMH would have a smooth trot. Zephyr's trot ranges from a very rare 7mph (he does NOT jog) to a more common 10mph working trot, to a 13mph extended trot. And he's only 14.2h. The extended trot has up to a 22" overstride. All are daisycutter trots. No, it's not smooth, you KNOW how fast you're going!! That's my only experience with half-Arabs. -Sharon L. in Maine Quoting kp ross <mamaross@xxxxxxxxx>: Sharon . . . Do you think that Arab / Foxtrotter crosses would tend to have a smoother trot . . . Just curious because in my experience the Thoroughbred in the Anglo Arabs makes a smoother trotting horse . . . . . . Oh and yes, I am looking into purchasing this cross . . . go figure . . . It's based on conformation and muscling. My Arab x Rocky Mountain Horse foxtrots, but only because he's BUILT for it and because after I bought him at 6yo I walked walked walked him as fast as he would go until his "four beat muscles" and muscle memory were built up. Then he developed a foxwalk (slower than foxtrot) and foxtrot. He does not foxtrot in the field for more than a few strides, but he will do it under saddle. Most of the time we choose to do a hard trot though. Half-gaited horses are a crapshoot. You're just as likely to get something that isn't built for ANY intermediate saddle gait as you are to get something that do any number of intermediate gaits (one or more than one)! Iknow of some 1/2 arabs that gaited very well. But they were out ofgaitedmares. Does anyone know how true this rumor is? Could an arab marehave agaited offspring? Jody PS. Cash Pony I believe would gait if trained that way...but hismotherwas the TWH. --------------------------------- Finding fabulous fares is fun. Let Yahoo!
