Re: [RC] [RC] Angie's Stallion - Opal Perry

Well my story isn't as dramatic as all that.. but I "rescued" a 5 year old stallion last December. A lady I know (I have bought several horses from her over the years) had let me know that her daughter was selling off some horses due to some family issues, so as I knew the stock they were out of I agreed to buy all 3 of them sight unseen (not smart LOL I know I know). Next day my friend pulls in with the stallion in the trailer (I was going down to pick up the 2 mares the following weekend). Turns out this boy hadn't been haltered since he was weaned from his dam, and had just been petted and fed. He wasn't wild, just knew NOTHING. It took them butt ropes and lots of muscle to get him in the stock trailer, over an hour of pushing and prodding. At one point the lady's husband said forget it, he can stay here! So I step in the trailer to bring him off, he won't lead. So it was a rump rope to get him OFF the trailer. At this point I am thinking.. "Ok genuis.. NOW WHAT???". We put him in a stall and I left for work. I stopped over the next day to load him in my trailer for the trip to my barn, the boy steps out of the stall and very calmly walks onto my trailer.. we are all standing there with our mouths hanging open.. we couldn't believe it. It turns out this little guy (he's 14.2) is just the nicest horse I have ever seen/owned/handled. He's still a stallion, my 14 year old daughter rides him on a regular basis, including doing his first 25 mile CTR this past April. He's a dream horse.. really, easy to handle, you show him something once and he's got it. This past Tuesday I walked outside and there went my daughter and her friend riding him double bareback down the street followed by 2 dogs... LOL THAT is what a horse is for! He is everything an Arab should be, sweet, easy going, will do whatever you ask him to do. Last weekend we took him camping, it was his first time picketing (he knows about electric corrals) and he was great, no one in camp even knew he wsa a stud, no calling, no silliness. So far he's covered 2 mares, so he knows what that part is all about, but when its not breedig time he's just a horse. I did a little bit of pedigree research and found out he's over 76% Crabbet/Blunt breeding and 96% CMK. He's got solid legs and feet (once we got them trimmed.. he'd never had his feet done either). My farrier is so pleased with him, he says he wishes all horses were so easy to trim! In less then 3 months we had that horse broke to ride, he hops on/off of trailers, will stand tied, can be clipped, washed and sprayed with no fuss... and we ride him in mixed company. I'll tell you guys this.. if that lady calls me back and offers any more of them I am RUNNING to hook up the truck & trailer!

So Angie.. if Seven turns out anything like Raff.. you've got a treasure! You know sometimes I think horses (and dogs for that matter) realize it when they have a good home.. and they reward us for it. Good luck girl!

Opal Perry
