I've never heard of them being protected here on the
coast of CA. We just leave them alone, unless there is evidence that they
have been killing calves. Then...as far as we're concerned, they're fair
game. A neighbor with cattle next to ours, a good many years ago, shot
numerous coyotes and hung them on the fences. We don't do that...it's too
much like exhibition.
We had one wander into our yard once, acting rather
peculiar...sort of confused and dazed. I had Lud shoot him and
then I took him to the county hospital for testing. He was not
rabid, fortunately.
In areas where coyotes are a problem, what are
the game laws and custom? In Wisconsin the recent arrival of coyotes has
caused no problems- not being native the fish and game folk don't consider
them protected. Anyone with a problem is welcome to shoot
them.
We have them here but since they are pretty
wary, I have never looked into the legal ramifications of eliminating
them.
