RE: [RC] Almost Totally Sound Barefoot - Karen StandeferDon, in the x-ray pictures.............was the wire placed at the hairline? If it was, there is considerable distance from the hairline to the extensor process (sunken coffin bone). In addition, the coffin joint axis is "broken back". Also, the sole is typically thicker than the dorsal hoof wall. On your horse, the sole is quite a lot thinner.......like maybe 1/2 as thin??? The front feet, in particular look dangerously thin to me. The reason that I bring this up is that without some sort of protection, the horse will be predisposed to pedal osteitis. The distance from the hairline to the extensor process also indicates mild laminitis from the laminae being pulled on from the sunken coffin bone. Here is a good site to evaluate hoof x-rays. http://www.hopeforsoundness.com/natbalance/workup/radiographs.html On another note..............a 25 degree hairline is considered healthy by most of the industry. There are just a couple of barefoot camps that keep trying to shoot for a 30 degree slope to the hairline. And, no, gutting the quarters will not bring it down. That would only serve to relax a pushed up hairline in the quarters (which is better done by correctly balancing the hoof and making sure it's loading evenly). I think in an attempt to get the hairline, you may have left the toes too long. Shortening them will get you a better aligned coffin joint and will also help you to build up sole thickness since the toe won't be running forward and thinning out the sole under the boney column. Meanwhile, if it were my horse (been there done that), I would protect those feet from concussion until the soles get thickened considerably. I'm thinking that scooping the quarters might help straighten that out, would that be correct? I am open to any and all comments. I only trim my 3 and make no claim to be a pro. If I was to make a claim it would be for "perseverance" even tho I was sorely tempted to go back to steel shoes. My only advise would be to get your horse out barefoot and just spend time walking everywhere and gradually increase the amount of time on the nasty footing. Their hooves really will go sound with a barefoot trim and walking time, not speed. For speed I use the boots.
