Re: [RC] [RC] USEF approval of new drug - Maryanne Gabbani

My comment about amateur versus professional horse sport was aimed as much at the show jumping crowd as it was at anything else. That has become a professional horse sport...only the professionals go to the Olympics for the most part. The costs of Olympic level competition are such that only corporations and syndicates can afford it. They have allowed quite a lot of drug use for horses to keep them going and people use a lot more than is allowed on a fairly regular basis, along with some pretty nasty training techniques. Most of the riders in Egypt are either hackers or show jumpers so I've watched this at the lower (national) levels. It's not a bad thing to notice what has happened to other disciplines when trying to guide your own. Hopefully the FEI will impose some limits on drugs for endurance....hopefully.

I think you guys are reading this press release wrong. USEF already
has a list of 'approved drugs' with published withdrawal times, etc.
Most of the other disciplines allow certain drugs during competition.

This press release is not about a new policy for drug use in
endurance or any other discipline.

This is about adding a new drug to the approved list.

The crux of the press release is the description of the new drug, and
it's approval. it seems this is an NSAID which is not as hard on the
stomach as others (e.g. bute).

"This new NSAID is the first cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) sparing drug to
be approved by the FDA for use in horses. The drug specifically
targets cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme responsible for causing
inflammation and pain in the body, and spares COX-1, which is
associated with many beneficial functions, including production of
the protective mucous lining of the stomach."
