RE: [RC] beet pulp - Katrina MosshammerI used to feed the shredded dry but not anymore. I never had a problem until I got my new mare last year. She is a total hog. Last May mom and I were going to go out on a moonlight with some locals. So we went out in the evening and rode 6 miles of it fast. Then went back to the trailer and feed the horses dinner (wet slurry) while we waited for everyone else. We then walked 10 miles with the group. Neither of the horses had drunk but they had eaten their slurry and we were only walking. The next morning mom went to feed and just gave them their grain and a little bp dry. Well Perle bolted her feed down and after 2 bites was choked. (Mom has been watching.) So we call the vet ( this was on a Sunday of course) and he was actually out of town he told us to give her a little ace to relax the muscles and start trying to massage the neck to break it up. Told us to call back later and tell him how she was. Well several hours and calls later, she still hadn't gotten any better. He told us if she wasn't better by morning to take her to the clinic. Well morning came (Which was also Monday and I was supposed to be at work 175 miles away). I take her up to the equine clinic that is couple of miles from my work. I told them what she had done and what we had done and that she was really choked. (I don't think the really believed me when I said it was a major choke.) They sent me on to work and said they would call as soon as they knew something. They called about noon and said they were going to tube her to take care of the choke and then they decided to go ahead and scope her to make sure they got it all. And they also gave her several bags of fluids. When I went by after work, they were like "Man she was really choked. She was blocked for 3/4 of her throat. And it was packed in hard" What had happened was the dry BP soaked up all of the moisture since it was still dry and had expanded so much it was jam packed. They kept her over night and the next morning they thought they would be nice and let her off of the lead because she had been tied the whole time. Well the first thing she did was reach down and grab a huge mouthful of shavings. The tech said she was like "Oh no, here we go again." (did I say Perle was a food Hog) Well they kept her overnight again to make sure the shavings didn't cause a problem. And I finally got to take her home Wed. evening. So my answer to why I won't feed it dry is: The last time I did it cost me over $4000 to fix.
