Re: [RC] [RC] Kudzu - Maryanne Gabbani

You see horses here chewing on palm logs all the time, and not just starving horses. Palms are very fibrous and some of the horses seem to love them. The farmers here plant a lot of zucchini, which is ready to harvest in about 60 days. Once they've taken the squash, they pull the plants and let the animals eat them...horses, donkeys, cows, goats, whomever. I think that we get used to the idea that there is "horse food" and "dog food", but someone forgot to tell the horses that and they will eat all sorts of things. Mine are very partial to cucumbers.

I remember reading that the Germans fed their horses sawdust.  They ate it, and it kept them alive and fat, but they had very low energy level.

During World War II the British were reduced to feeding their horses shredded paper for forage.  That and the necessary supplements kept the horses well fed.
