Re: [RC] Ride stewards - Eric RueterNot quite true. I am a AHA Endurance Steward and I am not in any way associated with USEF. I took the AHA (not USEF) test to become a steward because at the time there were only a couple of people who were AHA Stewards and AHA Regionals and National rides require a steward per the AHA rules. I do not charge a fee for services, and would negotiate any expenses. Part of the problem with AHA Endurance Stewards (and probably would be with AERC stewards if they were ever required) , is most are probably in the same situation I am. You cannot be a steward at a ride where any immediate family member is either competing or is, or could be considered as, part of ride management. thanx eric Eric Rueter Rueter Consulting, Inc. Perhaps there could be an on-line handbook and test for AERC steward certification like there is for certified vets now? In terms of payment, I don't think the expense of an AHA steward would be justified [they are typically paid $100-$150 per day plus expenses, but are certified by USEF and have a legal liability for their performance as steward]. I would think that some stewards would be willing to volunteer just as they would for any other position like P&R, etc. If the RMs wanted to reward the steward they could offer them a ride entry or something. I would probably be willing to participate in this program if it were developed and if the stewards did not have a legal liability. I know it's been considered before but I've asked the ride managers and competitions committees to consider it again. The GSFHR will have a ride steward (Robert Morris) at their request and expense in September.
