RE: [RC] How Did You Find Your Soul [Endurance] Horse ? Part 1 - Katrina Mosshammer

Here are my horse stories.

When I started riding endurance, at age 6, I rode a shetland/arab pony that
promptly bucked me off 9 times out of 10 I got on him. After making due
with him for a while mom relented a little and let me ride her arab
endurance horse that was in his late teens. Finally, when I was about 8,
another endurance friend of ours gave me a 6yo Anglo-arab of his that he had
started doing a couple of rides on, to use. It was a little rough for the
first couple of months but eventually we worked it out and we became
permanent partners. After I had used him for a couple of years our friend
signed his papers over to me and said he was mine. He was the first I ever
owned in my name, and I wasn't even a teenager yet! How cool. I rode in
endurance for @ 10 years and we had a little over 1000 miles together. He
finally started having some problems with arthritis so we retired him. I
still have him and he just turned 26 this year and he is still full of piss
and vinegar. In fact when mom brought her horse to my hose to stay while she
was away from home, he still had enough energy to beat up the 3 & 4 yo
geldings to keep them away from his "mares". The Old Coot.

Well after we retired him I took some time off from endurance while in high
school and college. When I came back to endurance I started riding my
arab/appy mare that had been given to us by another endurance friend. I
liked riding this mare and she was super sweet, but she got sick and has now
become blind so I can't even rider her any more. She and Whatta are happy
pasture mates now.

Thus began my search for a replacement for Whatta. I rode mom's mustang/arab
little while but he developed a bone spavin. My cousin had a friend who was
a breeder getting out of the business and we ended up taking a long 2 yo
straight Egyptian colt. But that didn't solve the problem of having
something to ride right now. Well two years ago my cousin picked up a
arab/pinto mare at the Addis sale and after she got her going she told she
thought she was what we were looking for. I took her and rode her for a
while and she did seem a good match, of awhile. She was just a 4 yo so she
was still testing everything. Well after a few months we started butting
heads and things just were not working out. She was just a little to high
strung for me and I wasn't in the position to work with a youngster. So the
search continued.
