[RC] Sued for Speed - heidi larson

we have a local state park with riding trails that has alot
of use, especially on weekends, treed, some areas you can
canter but few, mostly it's a good place to work on a trot
and walk down the hills. I have yet to go there where
someone doesn't complain about how fast I'm going. Now,
this is a small (what I call baby trot) compared to Ash's
big working trot and we go around 2-3 times, usually
lapping the complainer a couple times. They don't bitch
specifically AT me, but they make insinuating remarks like
-"endurance rider, right?" or "goin' pretty fast there
aren't you?" and they never smile or look happy to see us.
We are careful, generally get off the trail for the other
riders as it's good practice for our horses to have to
yield trail and I always announce my arrival when coming up
behind anyone and politely ask to pass when they have a
safe place to pull over, smile, compliment their horses,
etc. Most people are very nice, ask questions about the
horses or the sport, but there are always a couple (usually
the ones that ride at a slooooow walk and never offer to
move out of YOUR way) that don't want anyone travelling at
anything faster than what they are doing. How does one
define prudent speed? I ride a spooky horse and if he
spooks it's really his/my fault, unless it's something
totally dangerous that the other person is doing (like
galloping around a corner) but still, it comes down to
personal responsibility. (I should maintain some sort of
control over my horse.) If you were riding on a public road
and a car spooked your horse and it ran in front of the
car, could the rider sue the driver? Not saying it
couldn't happen, but realistically, what kind of case could
the rider possibly have? Riding is risky, that's the
bottom line, no matter how well trained your horse,
something can ALWAYS happen.
