  There is a notable landmark in the world of endurance riding, with 
Julie Suhr reaching the milestone of 30,000 miles this weekend. Frankly, 
it couldn't have happened to a nicer girl.
  My mother taught me as a child that we are all living by example, 
whether we know if others are watching or not. Julie's career and her 
writings clearly serve as conscious examples of who she is and how she 
feels horses should be ridden and treated. But, there are times, when 
she probably thought no one was watching, that her examples persisted. I 
have seen her sign autographs, kiss a newly acquainted child on the 
forehead, and endure endless attention from her fans in our sport, when 
she would probably rather be brushing her horse. She has served her 
family and our sport, and says she is as excited about a new horse as 
when she was 12 years old.
And she taught me, among other things, how important it is to know my 
horse by what his eyes are telling me.
   Thank you, Julie, for setting so many fine examples over the years.
