Re: [RC] [RC] Frank's comments - frank solanoGood Morning Bruce,
With Valentine's Day fast-approaching, perhaps a bit more on the heart.
(It's minus 14 degrees wind chill this morning at 8:00.
My pulse is 60bpm.)
I certainly agree with my friend Bruce on the importance of the HEART, for horses and people.
My contention, however, was regarding people who focus on PULSE.
Certainly, since so many things affect the heart's ability to do its normal job, when, in the heat of competition, it finds itself faced with the myriad of things Bruce clearly illuminated for us, the horse's PULSE (sometimes) will indicate it. The QUALITY of the contractile moment in a fatigued horse's heart, how much blood can truly be pushed out to help get a handle on compromised systems relative to pain, dehydration, core temp, lack of efficient gut motility, etc., is something else.
Which horse is in more distress: A horse, with a resting pulse at vet in of 28, who now has a pulse of 70 after fifteen minutes?....or a horse, with a resting pulse of 40 at vet in, who now has a pulse of 70 after fifteen minutes?
Just what does the 70 mean?
For me, being pulse-centric means a rider will do he/she can to get that pulse to drop to criteria, then get "right back at it", as if everything else is "okay"...which it probably isn't.
Now, I have to go try to put a band aid on my thumb without having it fall off while I drink coffee.
Go Big Red (Volleyball),
Frank
