Re: [RC] [RC] RC: Electrolyte Use - Nik Isahak Abdullah

Truman ,

I am not involved in any marathon or ironmen activities here nor have input on what these 'crazy 'guys do but endurance guys here ride the whole day and none ever give thought to 'electrolyting oneself' apart from probably gulping the occasional can of isotonic solution like '100 plus' etc etc not on a concious level to EL but rather as a drink of choice .At the specie level I think if I am not mistaken we lose EL' isotonically' unlike in horses where potasium loss is heightened ie higher than horse plasma level [ Heidi ,I stand corrected here ]
Even in the tropics ,plain water is everything ,at the 'practical' level at least to overcome dehydration.None of us here doing endurance [and our ride used to be very long drawn out affairs until we introduce evening affairs ,24 hours kind of thing from from midnight till dusk] ever thought we need EL supplementation .We are not 'scientific' but we survive ok .But when come to our horses, thanks to Nancy Loving Nina Warren et al we follow you guys ,but now we have to rethink
Was reading 'bananas' yeaterday .Very high in potasium and very nice for human and horses .Could be a kinder EL of sort and act as Tom Iver's CHO Loader .Cheaper and natural as well .Another spanner in the engine Truman !

Nik,

In humans how much of our base electrolytes can we lose before medical problems sit in? I know this is not 1-1 since there are some species difference between horses and humans particularly when it comes to potassium. But the critical levels would I think be comparable.

Jay ,
That 40 to 60 gram preload you are referring to probably refers to the whole weight of the EL content plus the base ??Sounds very substantial to me .
