Re: [RC] [RC] 10 minute mile - Daniela DesiletsVery interesting discussion. I am enjoying it immensely. :-)While I am a long way from attempting my first ride (of any length), my colt and I are currently working on transitions in addition to collection. Last week I decided to do groundwork for a change - I have no idea exactly how fast I walk, but I know I am capable of 4 miles an hour (it's a good workout). My 14.2 QH did in fact have to jog to keep up when I picked up a fast walk in the arena. Now, I don't know if it's his age (rising 4 at the end of March), that he's got almost shorter legs than me *wink* or that he's not in shape yet (due to me taking it easy because he's a baby) but I am sure I wasn't walking 4 mph in the deepish sand arena. A person who can walk a 6 minute mile would have to really be truckin'. I would agree that quite a few horses would be pushed to a jog or trot. Daniela
A 10 minute mile is six miles an hour. Thats a pretty good clip at a walk. I suspect most horses average about 2 to 4 mph at the walk and most humans are closer to 2 than to 4. At six mph I would expect most trotting horses would jog or trot.
