Fw: [RC] re: elytes and "the French team" - Barbara McCrary
Cindy Collins asked that I share this with all on
Ridecamp. So, for what it may be worth, this was our experience with
E-lytes. I had always heard that giving E-lytes on an empty stomach was
bad, but Lud's horse had drunk some water at the VC, and I thought it might be
enough. I was wrong...

P.S. There were other sources of water along the way,
but the horse refused to drink. It was just his idiosyncrasy. My
young horse drank everywhere water presented itself.

On Death Valley ride in 2000, Lud and I arrived at a
VC, 35 miles into the ride. Lud had a horse that was a very poor drinker,
and we thought E-lyting him would solve the problem. It didn't on that
day; as soon as I gave him a dose of E-lytes, he started thumping, then went
into colic, and had to be treated with a lot of fluids IV. That particular
horse was trouble-prone because he wouldn't drink enough water. Lud
finally sold him for a pleasure horse and he's still alive and kicking and
making a teenage girl very happy.
I probably won't ever E-lyte a horse again. Of
course, I E-lyted my horse, too, but he was a good drinker, so nothing happened
to him.
"Electrolytes... that is really
the question not to be asked. Sorry to shout but WE DO NOT USE
ELYTES."
Wow! Guess some of our
old time top riders who don't believe in using them, might not be so stupid
after all. Wondering if the French team has the problems with ulcers we
are seeing with heavy elyte use?
