figures that it takes on average 10 minutes to get from the finish
line to camp at a walk. So you cross the line in first place
at 4:45, and the timer puts down 4:55 as your time. The rider
behind you crosses the line at 4:47, so the timer puts down 4:57 on her
card. So if she passes you on the walk back to camp, nothing has
changed.
I don't believe any of our rules address such an issue--but they do
say that the 50-miler will be at least 50 miles long (after that, you
round to the nearest 5 miles)--and in our case, we needed that
half-mile back to camp to make the trail 50 miles long anyway.
We never had any complaints when we did that.
