RE: [RC] Who to blame for high fuel costs - on Ridecamp??? - Smith, Dave
Angie: I think this has a lot to do
with our sport, if the rising cost of gas and diesel prevents us from getting
to the venue to practice it. I too am for the development of alternative
energy technologies. But that is not going relieve us of our current problem
which simply states is how to get myself and my horse to the ride without going
bankrupt. I appreciate you have a different outlook on this and I fully admit
that I don’t have all the answers. But in an economy based on
supply and demand, it only makes sense that we need to address both the supply
of oil and the artificial regulatory impediments to increasing that supply; as
well as finding every way possible to reduce demand. Renewable energy
will play an important role in reducing oil demand, but those incremental
reductions are vastly outmatched by the huge increase in worldwide oil demand as
China, India and many other places move
out their Third-World status. We here in the states have no control over
that. All the solar and wind-generated electricity we could reasonably envision
being developed over the next decade will save but a drop in the petroleum
bucket compared to the sea of oil flowing to these developing nations. Since
oil is a worldwide commodity, any increase in demand without an increase in
supply will mean only one thing: higher prices.

I am one of those "so-called" environmentalists
and I don't advocate a one-day boycott. I don't think that will solve
anything. I also don't think that opening up new oil fields is
an effective solution to address skyrocketing gas prices. That will only
address the symptoms and not the root cause of the issue which is dependence on
oil. In my opinion, we need to invest our efforts in alternative
energy solutions and reduce consumption.
Everyone has their own opinion of what should be
done. And we're each entitled to think and vote independently.
But I'm not sure why we're talking about this issue on Ridecamp.
Aren't we supposed to be talking about horses? What's next, capital
punishment?
The so-called environmentalists and the politicians in their pockets want you
to got out and boycott the local gas station. That way, you won't see
that it is them, not the oil industry that is behind this problem. It's
the old "Texas Two-Step,"
dazzle
'em with your footwork and they won't see you taking the wallet from your back
pocket.
