Re: [RC] [RC] I've got *hate* mail! - Lynne GlazerActually, the original phrase describing Calif is "the land of milk and honey", and then in the 70s some wag added "..., fruits and nuts". I like the double entendre since we are indeed where the fruits and nuts are grown. But we imported a lot of our more unusual folks, as a high school student in the 70s not far from SF, we all developed with well-rounded socialization. I wonder if it was SF Chron columnist Herb Caen that came up with the phrase? Hmmm.Lynne another one of those native Californians http://www.photo.lynnesite.com On Mar 26, 2007, at 4:28 PM, Barbara McCrary wrote: A great many of the nuts arrived in the 60s, I think. As a longtime Californian (family since 1890), I take some exception to being included in the fruits and nuts category, as I'm sure do other Californians. Someone once told me that the reason we have so many fruits and nuts is the weather. In many places in CA, the weather is conducive to odd living arrangements...under bridges, in the woods, in trees, etc. A person told me once that they did not have such people living in the county where she lived because "they winter-kill." Meaning, it is far too cold to survive these living arrangements in that area. Whatever...my parents raised me on numerous "colloquialisms", one of which was, "Everyone is queer but me and thee, and sometimes I think thee a bit queer, too." And that was in the times when queer meant "peculiar" not the current definition. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
